Keeping Your Pet Properly Hydrated

Hydration is critical for your pet's organ function, digestion, and overall health.

Water is essential for virtually every bodily function in pets. Dehydration can quickly become life-threatening.

Daily Water Requirements

  • Dogs: approximately 1 oz of water per pound of body weight per day
  • Cats: approximately 3.5–4.5 oz per 5 lbs of body weight per day

Signs of Dehydration

  • Dry, sticky gums
  • Loss of skin elasticity (skin tenting)
  • Sunken eyes
  • Lethargy
  • Reduced urination

Tips to Encourage Drinking

  1. Always provide fresh, clean water
  2. Use multiple water stations around the home
  3. Consider a pet water fountain (cats especially prefer moving water)
  4. Wet food can supplement water intake
  5. Add a small amount of low-sodium broth to water

Warning Signs

Excessive thirst (polydipsia) combined with frequent urination can indicate diabetes, kidney disease, or other conditions. Contact your vet if you notice these signs.
