Exercise Needs by Dog Breed

Different breeds have vastly different exercise requirements. Learn what your dog needs.

Exercise is essential for physical and mental health in dogs, but requirements vary enormously by breed.

High-Energy Breeds (60–120+ min/day)

Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Vizslas, Weimaraners

  • Need vigorous daily exercise
  • Benefit from activities like agility, fetch, running
  • Without adequate exercise, may develop destructive behaviors

Moderate-Energy Breeds (30–60 min/day)

Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Boxers

  • Daily walks plus play sessions
  • Enjoy swimming, hiking, interactive games

Low-Energy Breeds (20–30 min/day)

Basset Hounds, Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

  • Short, gentle walks
  • Be cautious in heat (brachycephalic breeds)
  • Still need mental stimulation

Exercise for Senior Dogs

Reduce intensity but maintain frequency. Short, frequent walks are better than one long one. Watch for signs of fatigue or pain.

Mental Exercise

Physical exercise alone is not enough. Puzzle toys, training sessions, and sniff walks provide crucial mental stimulation.
