Reading Your Pet's Behavior: Early Warning Signs

Behavioral changes are often the first indicator of health problems in pets.

Pets cannot tell us when they feel unwell, so behavioral changes are crucial early warning signals.

Common Behavioral Changes and What They May Indicate

Lethargy / Reduced Activity

One of the most common signs of illness. Could indicate infection, pain, anemia, or organ disease.

Changes in Appetite

  • Decreased appetite: Pain, nausea, dental disease, systemic illness
  • Increased appetite: Diabetes, Cushing's disease, intestinal parasites

Hiding or Withdrawal

Pets often hide when they feel vulnerable or are in pain. This is particularly common in cats.

Aggression or Irritability

A normally gentle pet becoming aggressive may be in pain. Always rule out medical causes before behavioral intervention.

Excessive Vocalization

Crying, whining, or howling can indicate pain, cognitive dysfunction, or anxiety.

Changes in Elimination

House soiling in a trained pet, straining to urinate/defecate, or blood in urine/stool requires prompt veterinary attention.

When to Act Immediately

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Collapse or inability to stand
  • Seizures
  • Suspected poisoning
  • Pale or blue gums
